Knowing what to pack for your first trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands can make your visit to this sunny paradise all the better. Whether you’re a last-minute packer or the kind of traveller who has a suitcase ready weeks ahead of the flight, you’ll want to refer to this guide on everything you should—and should not—bring to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Things You Need to Pack for Your Turks & Caicos Trip
The Turks and Caicos Islands is a tropical island chain south of the Bahamas. We benefit from great weather year-round, with almost 350 days of sunshine annually. Pack swimwear, light, breathable clothing like shorts and T-shirts, and a few dresses or button-down shirts to wear to the elegant lounges and restaurants on Providenciales. You’ll also want to pack:
For the Airport
● Passport
● Travel Insurance
● Proof of Return Ticket
● $200 USD in cash and an international credit card
For the Trip
● Sandals and dress shoes
● Swimwear and beach wraps/cover-ups
● Sunglasses and a hat
● A beach bag or tote
● Toiletries (including after-sun or aloe vera)
● Reef-safe sunscreen (to protect our marine environment) and lip balm with
SPF
● Type A and B travel adapters
● Bug spray
● Moisturizer
● Small day pack and purse for evenings out
● Prescription medications
● Sea-sickness medication, such as Gravol (for long boat trips)
What To Do if You Forget to Pack Something Important
If you forget an essential item like sunscreen, a toothbrush, or even over-the- counter medication, you should be able to get it locally. The Grace Bay area of Providenciales, just five minutes away from our villas in Leeward, has pharmacies, a medical clinic, tourist shops, clothing boutiques, and even a grocery store where you can find many of the essentials you’ll need for your trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Nice-to-Haves For your Vacation to Turks & Caicos
While they aren’t essentials for travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands, the following items can come in handy for exploring the island or spending long days at the beach. Consider packing:
● A lightweight drybag
● Closed-toed water shoes (useful for exploring Provo’s limestone coast,
which can be rocky in some parts)
● A Kindle, Kobo, or other eReader
● A portable battery pack for day trips
● A waterproof phone case
● Binoculars to spot interesting creatures
● A rash guard or sun shirt
● A GoPro or other underwater camera to take on snorkeling trips
What Not to Bring to Turks & Caicos
Some items are best left at home. Note that firearms and ammunition (including stray bullets) and other weapons are NOT allowed in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This rule is strictly enforced by the local authorities.
If you plan to do some fishing during your time on island, do not pack spear guns or pole spears. Spearfishing in the Turks and Caicos Islands is illegal, with the exception of using pole spears to hunt lionfish, a locally invasive species. Leave plants, fruits, vegetables, and live animals at home. If you’re travelling with pets, you’ll need to obtain an import permit and an International Health Certificate as well as pay a $50 fee before entering the country with your animal. Note that certain breeds, including the American Bulldog, Pit Bull Terrier, and the Japanese Tosa, are prohibited from entering the Turks and Caicos Islands.
